In the city that never sleeps, getting hitched is never a half-hearted affair. If you're a Sex and the City fan, you will know that single girls in Manhattan obsess over everything from their hair to their handbags. So imagine the zeal with which they set about celebrating the biggest day of their lives.
In this hilarious American reality TV show Bridezillas, nine neurotic New York career girls are determined to pull off the perfect wedding, even if it means alienating their fiances, reducing their best friends to tears and plunging themselves into debt.
'Meet the brides about to wring the romance out of their weddings,' announces the narrator as the 'bridezillas' whirl into overdrive, terrifying their bridesmaids and humiliating their fiances.
Bridezillas are a new breed of bride-to-be who mutate into snarling, aggressive control freaks during the run-up to their weddings. They all want the pretty fairy tale - but things quickly disintegrate into an ugly nightmare. We meet pretty 26-year-old Wall Street trader Vanessa, who is so determined to be the princess bride of her childhood dreams that she persuades fiance Dan, a lawyer, to forego buying a house so that she can spend pound sterling200,000 on their wedding.

Miho appears far more intent on getting her green card, which allows her to stay in America, than being with Joe 'for better or for worse'.
Fashion PR Karen, 29, does not seem particularly enamoured of her banker husband-to-be, Emmett, either, but she's passionate about looking great on the big day. She demands six fittings for her pound sterling2,500 dress - and still hates the end result. She also decides that she hates the unbelievably easygoing Emmett. 'I don't even like him,' she snarls into the camera. 'I hate him.'

These women may not be famous, but they demand - and invariably get - the kind of nuptials that would make Posh and Becks's wedding look almost understated. For a bridezilla, to have a low-key wedding is to commit social suicide. As far as a bridezilla is concerned, it's her big day and unless it turns out perfectly, she's going to make every last one of her guests suffer.
The term 'bridezilla' was first coined by the clipboard-wielding wedding planners who have become ubiquitous at upmarket New York weddings (think J-Lo in The Wedding Planner).
'Weddings here are a big deal because everybody is very competitive and obsessed with having the best of everything,' says New York wedding planner Elizabeth Allen. 'Planning a wedding has to be one of the most stressful things a couple does, both financially and emotionally. There are fights.
There are tears. However much you intended to spend, you end up doubling or even trebling the amount.'
